1. It was a diary site, not a blog site.
2. The teeny boppers mostly stayed away.
3. I liked the ability to have complete control over my template.
4. NO ADS!!! :) No ads on any of the pages whatsoever.
5. Cheap hosting: for only $14.95 per year (started out at $12 back in 2001), you could upload photos and then link wherever you wanted to. Most people had free diaries. I paid because I wanted to host photos for my template there.
6. Decent support.
7. More thoughtful entries from diarists, for the most part.
8. Pretty much troll-free, for the most part.
9. Easy upkeep and maintenance.
10. Did I mention few teeny-boppers and no ads???
RIP, D-X. You'll be fondly missed.
